Choosing the Right Laptop

What is the best laptop for a university student in South Africa?
For most students, a mid-range laptop with an Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 processor, 8GB RAM, and a 256GB SSD is a solid choice. Popular options include the Lenovo IdeaPad, HP 250 series, and Dell Inspiron. If you are studying design, engineering or video production, aim for 16GB RAM and a dedicated GPU. WhatsApp us with your course and budget and we will recommend the best fit.
What is the best laptop for working from home?
For working from home, prioritise a comfortable keyboard, at least 8GB RAM, a Full HD (1080p) screen, and good battery life. The Dell Latitude, Lenovo ThinkPad, and HP EliteBook ranges are built for all-day productivity. If you are on video calls frequently, look for models with a built-in HD webcam and decent microphone.
What specs do I need for video editing or graphic design?
Video editing and graphic design are demanding tasks. You will need at least an Intel Core i7 or AMD Ryzen 7 processor, 16GB RAM (32GB preferred for 4K editing), a fast SSD (512GB+), and a dedicated GPU such as an Nvidia GTX or RTX series. A colour-accurate Full HD or 4K display is important for design work. Contact us with your software (e.g. Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, Photoshop) and budget for a tailored recommendation.
Do you sell gaming laptops?
Yes. We stock gaming laptops from brands including MSI, Asus ROG, Lenovo Legion, Dell Alienware and HP Omen. Gaming laptops require a dedicated GPU (Nvidia RTX series recommended), at least 16GB RAM, and a high-refresh-rate display. Browse our laptop listings or contact us for current gaming stock.
What is the difference between an i5 and i7 processor?
Intel Core i5 processors are fast enough for everyday tasks — web browsing, Office, video calls, and light editing. Core i7 processors offer more cores and higher speeds, making them better for multitasking, video editing, 3D rendering, and software development. For most office and student use, an i5 is sufficient and more affordable. If you run demanding applications or need future-proofing, an i7 is worth the extra cost.
Should I buy a new or refurbished laptop?
A refurbished laptop is a great choice if you want more performance for your budget. Our refurbished laptops are professionally tested and cleaned, come with a store warranty, and typically cost 30–50% less than new equivalents. New laptops are better if you need the latest features, a full manufacturer warranty, or are buying for a business that requires brand-new assets. If you are unsure, WhatsApp us with your requirements and budget and we will advise.
How much RAM do I need?
8GB RAM is the minimum for comfortable everyday use in 2024. 16GB is recommended if you multitask, run multiple browser tabs, use video conferencing tools, or work with larger files. 32GB is ideal for video editing, 3D design, virtual machines, and software development. Avoid 4GB laptops for any modern workload.
SSD or HDD — which is better?
SSD (Solid State Drive) is significantly faster than HDD (Hard Disk Drive) — your laptop will boot in seconds, applications open instantly, and files copy quickly. We strongly recommend choosing a laptop with an SSD as the primary drive. HDDs are cheaper per GB but much slower and more prone to mechanical failure. All our recommended laptops use SSDs.

Trust & Safety

Are refurbished laptops reliable?
Yes, when bought from a reputable dealer. Every refurbished laptop we sell goes through a multi-point inspection: we test the screen, keyboard, battery, ports, and performance, clean the unit, and replace any failing components. All refurbished laptops come with a store warranty so you are covered if anything goes wrong.
Is it safe to buy a laptop online from you?
Yes. Our online checkout uses secure, encrypted card payment processing. We have been operating since 2010 and have served thousands of customers across South Africa. You can also read our returns and warranty policies before purchasing. If you prefer, you can pay by EFT and we will dispatch once payment clears, or collect in-store.
Do you buy second-hand laptops?
Yes, we do buy select second-hand and ex-corporate laptops. WhatsApp us the make, model, and condition (with photos if possible) and we will give you a valuation. We buy in bulk from businesses upgrading their fleets.
Can I trade in my old laptop?
Yes. We accept trade-ins against the purchase of a new or refurbished laptop. Bring your old laptop in-store or WhatsApp us photos and specs for a valuation. Trade-in value depends on the make, model, age, and condition.

Repairs — Detailed

Do you repair MacBooks?
Yes. We repair MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models including screen replacement, battery replacement, keyboard repair, charging port repair, and software issues. Apple products have tighter tolerances than Windows laptops so repair times may be slightly longer. Contact us with your MacBook model and fault description for a quote.
How much does a laptop screen replacement cost?
Screen replacement prices depend on the laptop make, model, and screen size. Common 15.6" Full HD screens typically range from R800 to R1,800 including labour. MacBook and premium ultrabook screens cost more. Contact us with your laptop model for an accurate quote — we will confirm the price before starting any work.
Can you fix a water-damaged laptop?
Sometimes, yes. Water damage success depends on how quickly the laptop was powered off after exposure and how much liquid got in. Bring it in as soon as possible — do not try to turn it on. Our technicians will assess the damage, clean the board, and advise on what can be recovered. We will always quote before proceeding.
Do you do data recovery?
Yes, we offer data recovery services for failed hard drives and SSDs. Success rates vary depending on the type and extent of the failure. If your laptop will not boot or your drive is not recognised, bring it in for assessment. We will advise on the likelihood of recovery and the cost before proceeding.

Business & Corporate

Can you supply laptops for a whole office or company?
Yes. We supply bulk laptop orders for companies of all sizes. We can configure, image (pre-install software), asset-tag, and deliver directly to your office. Corporate pricing is available for orders of 5 or more units. Contact us or submit a quote request at laptop.co.za/quote for a tailored proposal.
Do you offer IT procurement services?
Yes. We act as a procurement partner for businesses needing laptops, accessories, and peripherals. We can source specific models, manage procurement across multiple departments, and provide invoicing and documentation for asset registers. WhatsApp or email us to discuss your requirements.
Do you provide invoices for business purchases?
Yes. We issue VAT invoices for all purchases. If you need a formal quotation on company letterhead before placing an order, use the quote request form at laptop.co.za/quote and specify that it is a business purchase.
